A fun fact about me is … I love making paper flowers!
I racially identify as … mixed race--my mom is from the Philippines and my father is from Pakistan.
When people ask me the question “what are you?” I usually say … I'm from New York. If they press on, I say mixed, and then tell them about my mother and my father. I even usually end up going into my grandparents backgrounds because I don't look Filipino. So basically I recite my family tree.
My favorite thing about being mixed is … you can relate to more people! And more people relate to you! Also you get to eat twice as many different types of amazing food!
The most difficult thing about being mixed is … feeling like you don't really belong to any tribe. For a while I felt like I wasn't Filipino enough for my Filipino relatives or Pakistani enough for my Pakistani relatives. You can feel kind of left out or not enough.
If I could visit anywhere in the world, it would be … countries in Asia! I've been to the Philippines, India and Pakistan, but I'd love to visit other countries in the surrounding area! Japan, Vietnam, Jordan, China! Anywhere really though, I love to travel.
If I had one day left on Earth, I would eat … pizza! I am a New Yorker after all.
When I was a kid, I wish I would have known that … being mixed is amazing--don't worry that people might be confused about what you're eating or wearing! You get to see and experience twice as much of the world than others!
